Watt Buster Equipment

Appliance Meters: Kill A Watt™, Watts up?

Curious about how much electricity that old refrigerator uses? Find out by borrowing an appliance meter. Chugach has two different devices - the Kill A Watt™ and Watts up? The meters are available on loan to any Chugach customer for up to one month.

These devices are a quick and easy way to measure how much electricity your various appliances and entertainment equipment use. The devices can display consumption by kilowatt hour, electricity expenses by day, week, month or year, and voltage and amperage readings.

To borrow a Kill A Watt™ or Watts up? monitor, complete this form [link] and email to service@chugachelectric.com, or call Member Services at 563-7366.

Past Initiatives

SmartPower promotes LED education

In the fall of 2010, Chugach initiated a new LED education project with the Anchorage School District. Fourth-grade classes at nine schools in the district were selected to participate. Chugach staff presented a 20minute program on how light is produced, the differences between LED and incandescent light bulbs, measuring and conserving electricity.

Students were asked to measure the energy usage using a KillAWatt™ meter for each string of lights and calculate the differences between the LEDs and the incandescent strings of light. All students in participating classrooms received at least one set of LED light strings.

Each classroom held a contest to encourage students to swap out their family's incandescent light strings for LED light strings. The top three classrooms were awarded a $250 cash prize. The schools also competed with each other. The top three received a full energy audit. Meters for the project were provided at a discount by Home Depot on Tudor Road.

The LED education project is expected to be conducted in more schools in fall 2011.

Watt Buster Research Project

In 2010, Chugach Electric conducted a research project, called Watt Buster, on the impacts of residential and commercial building energy monitors (BEMs) on energy efficiency and conservation. This project was funded in part by a matching grant up to $75,000 from the Alaska Energy Authority under AEA Metering Project #AEA10-012.

CFLs exchange a hit at Spenard Farmers' Market

Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) donated by Chugach Electric and ML&P were a big hit at the Spenard Farmers' Market, July 31. The 250 CFLs were swapped for burned-out CFLs, which were collected for recycling. The CFL exchange is sponsored by SmartPowerAK, Chugach's energy efficiency initiative. Chugach will continue to offer CFL recycling at the Spenard Farmer's Market through the summer season.

Spenard Farmer's Market is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers.

As always, Chugach members can also drop their burned out CFLs in the recycle bin at 5601 Electron Drive. CFLs for recycling must be in individually sealed plastic bags. Broken CFLs are not accepted.

This is a great program to reduce energy use and carbon footprint by using CFLs and disposing of CFLs in an earth friendly way.

SmartPower CFL coupon program kicks off Jan. 15, 2009

Chugach Electric Association and Municipal Light & Power are joining forces to help residential customers save money. Customers of both utilities will be able to use $2 off coupons to buy compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). As a "Buy Alaska" move, the coupons will only be redeemable at the three Anchorage locations of Brown's Electrical Supply. Coupons will arrive with customers' bills and they will also be available at the utilities' customer service departments and at Brown's locations.

Chugach & ML&P will introduce the five Satco CFLs that will be available for sale using the $2 off coupons at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Chugach Electric headquarters building located at 5601 Electron Drive.

Satco is a nationally known Energy Star manufacturer that works closely with Brown's on a variety of energy efficient lighting elements. Satco representatives will make a short presentation on types and color temperatures of CFLs at the kick-off. This will be a time to get answers from the experts and save on your electricity bills.
